In Salem, Oregon, at the Willamette Heritage Center from September 27th — December 23, 2019, a bit of Sherman County will be on display! Stitches & Stories: Discoveries from the Oregon Quilt Project , a retrospective exhibit on the work done by volunteers working with quilts from around the state of Oregon.

The Sherman County Historical Museum is one of the many museums to have trained volunteers to index quilts which are documented and then added to an open access digital repository of images, stories and information of public and private quilts from around the world.

Representing the incredible journey of volunteers and documented quilts over the past 9 years from around the state will be a quilt from the Sherman County community. Quilts are made for a purpose; those in this exhibit represent some of the reasons why. Whether it is utilitarian or decorative, for a special occasion or a community event, each quilt tells a story all its own.

During the 1889-1989 Sherman County Centennial Celebration 2 identical quilts were made representing the county landscape and what you will find within its boundaries. One quilt is a jewel on display behind glass at the local Sherman County Historical Museum and the other quilt was raffled for a museum fundraiser. The quilt design was created by Sherry Kaseberg, and community members made each of the blocks and put it all together. The replica quilt is on loan and on display at the Willamette Heritage Center for this special event.
