Sherman County's Best Oregon Trail Sites:

1. Oregon Trail John Day River Crossing at McDonald east of  Wasco and the Sherman County Historical Society Monument and Bureau of Land Management interpretive kiosk. Take a picnic! 

2. Oregon Trail hiking segment between Biggs Junction and Fulton Canyon/Highway 206 -- marked by simple wooden posts.

3.  Oregon Trail Overland Route's first view of the Columbia River -- marker is on old Highway 30 near the above site, and below the site where emigrants first viewed the Columbia River. 

4. Cut-off to the Barlow Road interpretive sign in Grass Valley, Oregon.

5. Cut-off to the Barlow Road at Hollenbeck Point and Buck Hollow are viewed from the narrow, winding Highway 216 on Sherar's Grade southeast of Grass Valley.

6. Oregon Trail river route from Wallula to The Dalles on the Columbia River. Stop at Biggs, Rufus or the parks along the river. 

Signs marking the Oregon Trail and the cut-off to the Barlow Road take visitors very close to the actual routes. This is not an invitation to trespass on private land. This region is subject to strong winds and wildfires and smoking is not advised. Do not drive in dry grass or wheat stubble.  Watch for trucks during July and August grain harvest.
